Stuart Liddell MBE
A World Champion at the 1st Walloon Pipe Band Championship
We are honoured to welcome Stuart Liddell MBE as the sole adjudicator of the 1st Walloon Pipe Band Championship, taking place in Silly, Belgium, on 25 September 2027.
One of the most accomplished pipers of his generation, Stuart Liddell has built an exceptional career both as a solo competitor and as a Pipe Major. Originally from Inveraray, Scotland, he began playing the bagpipes at the age of nine under the guidance of his grandfather, the late Pipe Major Ronald McCallum MBE. He later studied with Arthur Gillies, Jim Henderson and Hugh MacCallum.
Stuart is a four-time Glenfiddich Piping Champion, having won the prestigious championship in 2009, 2014, 2020 and 2025. He has also won the Senior Piobaireachd at the Argyllshire Gathering in Oban five times, including both Gold Medals, as well as three Clasps at the Northern Meeting in Inverness. His other major solo achievements include victories at the Donald MacLeod Memorial and the Springbank Invitational.
Pipe Major of Inveraray & District
In 2004, Stuart founded the Inveraray & District Pipe Band, which he continues to lead as Pipe Major. Under his leadership, the band has established itself among the world's leading pipe bands, winning the World Pipe Band Championship in Grade 1 in 2017, 2019, 2024 & 2025.
Before founding Inveraray & District, Stuart spent seven years with the Scottish Power Pipe Band, followed by eleven years with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band of Vancouver, Canada.
A Champion and an Educator
Beyond competition, Stuart is deeply committed to the teaching and development of piping. A piano tuner by trade, he is also a piping instructor at Mid Argyll Primary School and Lochgilphead High School. His playing, teaching and leadership have influenced generations of pipers and contributed to the continued development of the instrument.
